A bigger perspective

For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
- Luke 12:23-24

Jesus wants to give his followers and his friends a bigger perspective. There’s more to life than food and clothes and stuff. Everyone and everything seems to know that but us.

Jesus points our attention to the ravens. Look at how God takes care of them. Wouldn’t the same God who takes great care of the birds also take great care of those he has called to be his sons and daughters?

If all our attention goes to our immediate circumstances – our work and our bank balances – our vision of the world collapses. We peck and scratch at the small piece of worked-over earth in front of us, unaware that the Lord has abundantly provided for us beyond the edges of our current field.

Jesus commends a posture of trust. Trust that you matter to God. Trust that he’ll take care of you. Trust that there’s more to this life.

What would happen if God’s people truly learned to trust him? We’d experience tremendous peace and joy, contentment and confidence, gratitude and intimacy with Jesus. We’d discover a new well of creativity and boldness. We’d practice generosity.

What presence does God have in your perspective on your resources? How has God challenged you to take a bigger perspective on your resources and to grow in trusting him?
