A Gratitude List

“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.”

- Psalm 136:1 (NLT)

One of the best things I ever learned was the importance of keeping a gratitude journal. It is so powerful that secular seminars teach it—in fact, that is where I first heard about it. However, the idea showed up in the Bible millennia ago (WOW!).

In the poetry book of the Bible (The Psalms), Psalm 136 reads like an entry in a gratitude journal. It inventories God’s heroic acts on behalf of the Israelites, one by one, each one followed by the repetitive phrase, “His love endures forever” or “His mercy endures forever” or “His love never quits”--or some other similar wording, depending on your translation.

God is always extending his loving hand in our direction, no matter what our circumstances look like. Many times he cloaks his lovingkindness towards us behind the backdrop of everyday occurrences, and it is our choice to give the credit to God. A gratitude journal can help remind us of where God is stepping into our lives. His hand never grows tired, and neither does his patience—and this is certainly something to be thankful for!

If you don’t know where to start, try beginning with listing three things each day that you are grateful for and watch it transform your perspective. Perhaps you might do this with a friend and talk about how God is speaking to you through this conduit of gratitude.
