Breaking the routine

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”

- Exodus 3:1-3

Moses was having an ordinary day, doing his ordinary job leading ordinary sheep. Most of Moses’ days were ordinary days. Unremarkable. Boring. We don’t hear about them.

But this day was special.

Moses saw a burning bush and went over to check it out. The bush was burning but was not consumed.

What would have happened if Moses had been too bored and zoned out to notice the burning bush? What would have happened if Moses noticed the burning bush, but just rubbed his eyes and shook his head and grumbled something about spending too much time in the wilderness? What would have happened if Moses was too busy to go over and check out the bush?

Moses was willing to break his routine. And he ended up meeting the Lord.

Moses had an appointment with the work God had for him to do. That day was THE day for him. History hinged on Moses’ willingness to have his work interrupted. From here he receives God’s call to participate in the great Exodus story … and to have a key role in that story.

How interruptible are you? Where might God be trying to break your routines to get through to you? Will you pause today to engage with him?
