Deeds and faith

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
- from James 2:18

As we finish up our week with James, we hear one more admonition about faith and deeds. James is convinced that our deeds reveal our faith.

What do your deeds reveal about your faith?

When I unnecessarily and chronically overwork, I reveal something about my faith in myself. When I irresponsibly spend money I don’t have on junk I don’t need, I reveal something about my faith in stuff. When I respond to crisis with panic, I reveal something about my faith in God.

We can learn about the condition of our faith by paying attention to our deeds. And we can put our faith on display in powerful ways every day.

Today, we’re going to invite you to take a Holy-Spirit-led inventory of your faith and deeds.

Find yourself a journal, pen and a quiet place. Take a few moments to sit at peace and quiet your soul.

When you feel ready, ask the Lord to draw your attention to a particular activity that he wants you to work with today. Write that activity down.

Ask the Lord to help you understand what that activity reveals about your faith.

  • What do you see that’s healthy?
  • Where do you need your faith strengthened?
  • What do you see that needs to change?

Write down what you’re seeing.

Ask the Lord to guide you in any next steps you need to take. Write them down so you don’t forget them.
