Eclipsed by Jesus

His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied …
- Luke 1:67

Extraordinary events surrounded the birth of John, the son of Zechariah (later to be known as John the Baptizer or John the Baptist). Angels appeared to his father. His mother got pregnant after years of infertility. His mother was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave a powerful word of encouragement to Mary. And then John’s father gathers up his voice and shares the prophesy we’re going to be studying this week.

But we don’t celebrate John’s birthday. There’s no Merry Johnmas. We don’t let our hair grow long and eat locusts in memory of John’s wild wilderness ministry.

John was going to lead an extraordinary life. But he would be eclipsed by Jesus.

John’s life would be to serve as a pointer to Jesus. That destiny hung over him from before his birth. And it’s recorded in the text of his father’s prophesy (which we’ll look at this week).

What words have been spoken over you from your youth? What stories did you jump into the middle of when you were born? In what ways have you been eclipsed in your family or extended family?

"We don’t let our hair grow long and eat locusts in memory of John’s wild wilderness ministry." Why not? I had a fried locust once. It was pretty tasty--like bacon! LOL
