Generous happiness

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
- Matthew 25:21, 23

This is what the master wants to say: “Well done, good and faithful servant!” This celebration is his motivation. He’s so happy to see the faithfulness of his servants. He’s so happy to give them opportunities to do bigger and better things. He’s so happy he has to share it.

Our God is an overwhelmingly happy and generous God. Chapter after chapter of the Bible echoes with his joy. Every sunrise, according to GK Chesterton, signifies God’s great “Do it again!” joy in all that he’s made.

Don’t misunderstand us. The world can be hard and sad at times. God our master and king must, at times, show firmness and seriousness and even anger. But in his depths, our God is filled with love and joy and happiness.

He makes the trees clap their hands and the leaves burst with oranges and reds before they fall to the earth. He fills fields with wildflowers and sprinkles snow like sugar on the mountaintops. He twists and bends the rivers so the waters brushing the rocks will echo his whispers of delight.

Our generous God wants us to share his happiness. All accountability from our heavenly Father is primarily motivated by his desire that we would be with him and would share his joy.

What do you think it would feel like to share in God’s happiness? How can you celebrate with him today?
