Giving Thanks

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.

- Luke 24:30

When we ask people about their prayer habits, we hear a lot about mealtime prayer. Even folks who struggle to pray throughout the rest of the day can pause to give thanks before eating.

When Jesus died, his disciples scattered and hid. Two of them set out for Emmaus and encountered Jesus – raised from the dead – on the road. They didn’t expect to meet him there and didn’t recognize him.

In other words, they were very much like us: so busy walking and working that they missed the presence of Jesus.

These disciples paused for dinner and invited Jesus to join them, still unaware that it was Jesus. As they started to eat, Jesus took the bread and gave thanks and it was at that moment that his disciples recognized him.

As you enjoy your Thanksgiving meal today, pause to give thanks to God. Fight the urge to pray a ceremonial prayer, a small prayer. There are no small prayers!

Thank God like he’s really generous and really listening to you express gratitude.

And may you recognize Jesus today. [Amen! Pass me a drumstick!]
