Good works

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
- Ephesians 2:10

God’s got good work for us to do. He’s carefully crafted us to participate in particular places in his plans for people and for the world. The pathway to our greatest joy runs right through the good works that God’s done and that he invites us to do.

God has nothing against good work. Sometimes, in our eagerness to communicate the good news that God’s salvation comes to us as a free gift, we downplay the great, good, meaningful, beautiful, world-changing work that God gives us to do. We paint a picture of the Christian life as something that’s lives out in a hammock. Few things could be farther from the truth.

The grace of God extends beyond our salvation and into our day-to-day lives. He gives us his Holy Spirit and gifts to bless people and communities. He pulls us into his activity.

We find ourselves speaking words that bless the browbeaten. We comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. We share and care and create. We have a particular place set aside for us in God’s mission to engage the world for good.

No one else can take your place. You’re unique. God made you that way. And he knew what he was doing.

What good works has God prepared for you to do this summer? As we road trip with Jesus, joining his work will be one of the key ways we encounter him and experience transformation. What is he inviting you to do?
