No roadmap

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh … Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
- Galatians 5:16, 25

As you’re walking through life and all your relationships, walk by and with the Spirit. Walking by the Spirit looks like walking in the power that God’s Spirit gives. Living by the Spirit means living the life God’s Spirit gives you. Keeping in step with the Spirit means making real-time and active responses in a moment to the Spirit’s guidance.

God doesn’t give us a roadmap for our marriage. Marriage always involves confusion, surprises, twists and turns. All real relationships have a measure of unpredictability. That’s okay. Walking by the Spirit isn’t like getting directions; it’s much more like getting into the car the Spirit’s driving.

Throughout the course of this series, we’ll unpack lots of helpful tools that will help in your marriage or other committed relationships. But at the end of the day our hope and prayer for you is that you’d keep in step with the Spirit, wherever that leads: into hard places, conflict, forgiveness and even joy.

What does walking with the Spirit look like?

Two ideas came to our minds:

  1. Obeying the Scriptures: God’s Spirit speaks to us powerfully through the Bible, guiding our next steps.
  2. Listening to the Nudges: God’s Spirit nudges us through our memories, emotions, conscience and our internal dialogue with him. He’ll never nudge us to disobey what we read in the Bible. But often these internal nudges help us determine the next step the Spirit is inviting us to take with him.

Spend time today reading and praying, asking the Spirit to help you walk in step with him.
