Paying attention

When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”
- Genesis 40:6-7

Joseph was busy running the prison. He had a great big pile of logistics, coordination, and systems maintenance to attend to. He had been entrusted with responsibility. And yet he took time to pay attention to the emotional state of his fellow prisoners.

All too often we get so busy doing our good work that we forget to connect with the people who God has placed in our path.

Joseph’s ability to connect emotionally with his fellow prisoners, his personal interest in their emotional state opened an opportunity for him to connect with them and help them. If he were too busy, that opportunity would have passed him by.

Try to take a beat today to attend to the emotional state of people around you. Ask a check-in question: “Why do you look so _______ today?” See what God will do with that attention.
