Receiving and Sharing

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
- John 7:37-39

Yesterday, we reflected on this beautiful invitation from John 7. Come to Jesus and have your thirst quenched. Believe in him and rivers of living water will flow from within you. He will give us the Spirit. Spectacular!

Today, we want to turn a corner and reflect on the implications of this passage for the people who live downstream from us. When Jesus fills us with living water and that water overflows from within us, we give life to the world around us. The Spirit prompts us to make the world a better place, to love our neighbors and God, to share what we've been given.

Jesus invites us to ask for the Spirit. A few weeks ago, Alex challenged us to ask Jesus to send us his life-giving Spirit. Our God, who gives so much so generously, promises to give his Spirit to us if we ask.

And when he gives us his Spirit, we receive power to share the life we receive in Jesus with those around us. We become his witnesses. We become his agents. We become his hands and feet.

Would you take a few minutes today to ask God to send you his life-giving Spirit, so that you would overflow with living water and bless all those around you?
