Rejoice in the Lord

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

- Philippians 4:4

"Rejoice in the Lord," said Paul. And that sounds good to us, right?

"Always," said Paul. And that's where Paul starts to lose me. "Always?" I ask. I have good days, comfortable days, days when I get up on the right side of the bed and on those days, rejoicing in the Lord comes easily.

But every day isn't one of those days. Sometimes I get up on the side of the bed that's surrounded by my children's sharpest, foot-destroying toys.

"Always, Paul?"

"I will say it again: Rejoice!" he replies. He had to say it again and again because we so easily give up on joy and settle for small, joyless lives.

Rejoicing in the Lord is the energy that enables us to have joy in all things. It's not a boundary or a burden ... "Rejoice or I'll zap you." Instead, joy in the Lord enables joy to permeate all things. Joy in the Lord is a gift that pours joy even into the most joyless days.

At the risk of being redundant, like Paul, we will say it again:

Rejoice in the Lord

Rejoice in the Lord today

Rejoice in the Lord at work

Rejoice in the Lord at home

Rejoice in the Lord at school

Rejoice in the Lord in the hospital

Rejoice in the Lord when you're walking and when you're running

And when you're driving

And when you're washing the dishes or your hair

Rejoice in the Lord even when no one around you is rejoicing

Or you're not sure you're able to

Or you're not sure you want to

We'll whisper again

Rejoice
