Remember your moments

These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family, and in every province and in every city. And these days of Purim should never fail to be celebrated by the Jews—nor should the memory of these days die out among their descendants.
- Esther 9:28

Your nearest “such a time as this” moment may be behind you. That’s not to say that there may not be another on the horizon. But you may have had a significant moment from God in your past.

How often do you call your past moments to mind?

Over and over again throughout the scriptures, the refrain “Remember, remember, remember” gets repeated. And yet God’s people so easily forget.

Today and Tomorrow never stop pressing down on us. Challenges rear their heads and stamp their feet. Opposition sets our knees knocking and our hearts pounding. And the noise of it all threatens to drown out the sweet voice of memory.

The Jewish people combatted the press of Today and Tomorrow through strategic festivals devoted to memory. “God did this. God did that,” they tell themselves every year. And in their festivals they gain strength to ride their Todays and Tomorrows.

What had God done for you? What do you need to remember?

Throw a party to celebrate the anniversary of that courageous vocational decision God helped you make. Share the story of your almost-divorce and the work God did to keep you together (or the way God carried you through the divorce and into the community you’re now in today). Have a meal with friends to celebrate your sobriety.

Remembering your “such a time as this” moments in the past prepares you for the ones that are to come.
