Telling stories

1

The enemy boasted,
‘I will pursue, I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils;
I will gorge myself on them.
I will draw my sword
and my hand will destroy them.’
But you blew with your breath,
and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.

- Exodus 15:9-10

If we want to experience richer, deeper, more thoughtful celebration, we need to practice telling and retelling stories.

That's what the Israelites were doing in today's passage. They gave a blow-by-blow account (literally) of what's happened at the Red Sea. This storytelling fit perfectly in their time of celebration and shaped their steps into the future God had for them.

This happens to us when we tell family stories. We tell and retell these stories over and over again. Funny stories. Sad stories. Shaping stories. The values that we pass along as we share these narratives shape how we interact with each other and how we navigate the world.

In our relationship with God, telling and retelling stories of God's deliverance serves to anchor us in our life with God. These stories lead us into worship even when we don't feel worshipful or grateful. They keep us on track.

What stories of God's deliverance can you retell to help you grow in celebration?
