The Discipline of Celebration

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

“I will sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.

“The Lord is my strength and my defense;
he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

- Exodus 15:1-2

We frequently miss opportunities to celebrate God's faithfulness. We become too busy. Our circumstances overrun us.

Today's passage falls right after God's people pass through the Red Sea. Standing on the shore, fresh from their rescue, they compose a song and celebrate like CRAZY!

What would life look like for us if we practiced this discipline of celebration?

These people knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Lord had delivered them. Their celebration of God's deliverance kept them afloat, year in and year out, even through the hardest times.

But God's deliverance is not always so clear for us to see. "Was that actually God or did it just kind of work out?" we ask. We don't want to look foolish or superstitious. And yet, we know that God is at work.

The spiritual discipline of celebration requires us to discern God's hand in our moments of deliverance. Entire books could be written on this topic, but here are 3 quick steps to help you get started:

  • Ask God: "Hey, Lord, did you have something to do with this?"
  • Ask the Bible: "Does this echo a story of God's deliverance in the Bible?"
  • Ask your friends in the faith: "Do you think this could have been God doing this?"

In the last two weeks, how have you experienced God's had at work on your behalf? Write a poem-song-letter celebrating what the Lord has done for you.
