The Light Wins

But when [the people of Samaria] believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.
- Acts 8:12-13

When the light meets the dark, the light wins.

Dr. King said it well: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” And, in Jesus, light is driving away all of the darkness and love is driving away all the hate. That’s what happened in today’s passage.

Simon had sold himself to forces of darkness and had gained great acclaim as a sorcerer. He had a career based on his magic. But that started to change when he heard the good news about Jesus. Simon believed, was baptized, and started to orient his life around Jesus and his ministry.

Over and over again throughout the Bible and throughout history we see clear evidence that God loves to change the direction of the lives of people who were trapped in darkness. No one is too lost to be found. No one is too stuck to be freed. No one is too evil to be loved.

Do you know someone trapped in darkness? Do you feel trapped by the darkness? Let the light of the Son of God shine on you and on all of those you love. Jesus is eager to welcome and save all who will call on him for help.

How does a conversion story like Simon’s shape your hopes for others and for yourself?
