True Security and True Service

Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

- John 13:3-5

Today's passage has the least likely "so" in the whole Bible. Jesus knew he had received power. He knew where he came from and knew where he was going. And it was all positive! And as a result of this, he took a servant's posture.

If you had this much power, what would you do with it?

Today's passage helps us see that true service comes from a place of true security.

Particular acts of service can come from all sorts of weird places in our hearts and souls. Some serve with desperation, motivated by people-pleasing, pandering, guilt, subtle-self-righteousness, trying to keep God happy. This is so different from the service we see in Jesus.

Jesus' service comes from his security in his relationship with his Father. He's already received the Father's trust and has a secure future. This frees him to love and bless those around him without ulterior motives or selfish agendas. This frees him to share his security with us.

All of us serve with mixed motives. As you think about serving this week, what unhealthy motives do you find driving your service? How does the security you have in Jesus and his commitment to you free you to serve in healthier ways?
