Walking with the Wise

Walk with the wise and become wise,
for a companion of fools suffers harm.
- Proverbs 13:20

All week we’ll be zeroing in on this special verse … mining it for the treasures God wants to bring into our lives. Today, we want to zoom in on that first phrase: “walk with the wise”.

What do we do with the wise? Walk. We don’t just listen to the wise, watch the wise, or cheer for the wise. The invitation to wisdom is an invitation to an active discipleship that takes place in community.

What do you picture when you picture walking with the wise?

Maybe your mind conjures up an image of friendships. Walking and talking along a path through a forest can be an environment that’s conducive to the sharing of wisdom. Walking with the wise could look like being in an engaged friendship with someone who has some wisdom.

Maybe you picture a business partnership. You’re setting up a shop and hanging out your shingle. The person you’re going into business with knows something about the industry or how to run an enterprise like the one you’re setting up. This common sharing captures part of what it looks like to walk with the wise.

Maybe some other image comes to mind. Try this as an exercise today. What image might you use to describe “walking with the wise”? How does this play out in your life? Where are you walking with the wise?
