What requesting does for your relationship with God

“Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart.”

- Philippians 4:6 (GNT)

Many times the Bible instructs us to ask God for what we need. But if God knows our needs, wants to supply our needs, and is actually capable of providing all of our needs, why is the bible so adamant about our asking him?

God is certainly able to give us everything we need without our having to ask for it, but he is much more interested in the relationship. Think of a marriage or dear friendship. What happens when dialogue is exchanged between two people who care about each other deeply? The relationship grows.

God is not interested in playing games. He wants the connection. He wants the friendship. He wants us! What if prayer is as much about the process of the asking as it is about the final outcome of our request?

Jesus modeled this for us in his own prayer life: from The Lord’s Prayer (“Give us this day our daily bread”) to the beautiful prayer for his followers in John 17. And at the end of his life we read about his heart-wrenching petitions in the Garden of Gethsemane, as he asked God to let the cup of suffering pass over him.

Do you find yourself judging your requests before you present them to God: “Is this big enough?” or “Is it too big?” or “Am I worthy enough to even ask?” God doesn’t want you to hold back from him because of things like these.

What’s keeping you from asking God for help today?
