Whispered wisdom

“We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
- Genesis 40:8

Can you follow Joseph’s logic in the text? Both men had dreams. They both lament that they don’t have someone present to interpret dreams. Joseph points them to God: the owner of all interpretations. And then Joseph tells them to tell him their dream.

Which piece doesn’t fit? The last one!

If all interpretations belong to God, why are they to tell their dream to Joseph? Talk to God, boys. Talk to God. What good can Joseph do for you?

This shows you something about how Joseph saw his relationship with God. The Lord is seated on the throne and Joseph is his child, sitting in his lap. He knows he has a close connection with the God who owns all interpretations. He trusts that his Father will lean down and whisper wisdom in his ear when the time is right.

What is your relationship like with the God who owns all interpretations? As you navigate difficult situations and relationships, his presence can fill you with tremendous confidence. He can whisper wisdom in your ear and drive away your fears.

Try sitting and resting with God today. We repeat this spiritual exercise in the devotional from time to time because it’s so significant. Just relax on your couch or your rocking chair with the God who loves you. Ask him to make you aware of his presence. Carry that awareness with your into your day.
