Why should we ask for the Spirit?

1

Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

- Galatians 6:8-9

"I believe in the Holy Spirit ... "

- from The Apostles' Creed

Why should we want or ask for the Spirit?

The Holy Spirit causes our character and our work to bear holy fruit. You may be familiar with stories about the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23) or the courage the Spirit brings (2 Tim 1:7). The Holy Spirit plays an essential role in helping us to live the kind of lives we all want to live as we follow and serve Jesus.

At the end of our lives, the person we've become and the work we've done will be the source of both our greatest joys and our greatest regrets. And all of that is bound up with the work of the Spirit in our lives.

We are invited to sow to please the Spirit, to keep in step with the Spirit, to allow the Spirit to guide our actions and emails and tasks. He is how we will be able to do all things as worship unto the Lord, even the most mundane tasks on the most ordinary days.

Take a moment right now and ask God to guide you by the Spirit today.

Here's another example of what the Holy Spirit does--from my nephew just this week He was torching something--a task he does regularly for work--when he had a strong urge to put on his safety glasses, which for this task, impaires the precision needed for it. Discerning it was the Holy Spirit, he listened, put on his glasses and immediately his work burst into flames in his face and knocked him backwards! He had some burns and blisters, but his eyes were saved! He posted on FB how we sometimes do not listen to that still, small voice, but this time he's so glad he did (and so is his wife!! ;-D)
