Work that resonates

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

- Genesis 2:15

Did you catch that? “To work it and take care of it.” From the very beginning, God has given human beings work to do. God gave the man work to do that fit him, that resonated with how he was made.

Work happened before the curse.

Work is not a curse.

Work is good.

And yet, for many of us work is difficult. We slog away at jobs we don’t love. Or we can’t find employment. Or we have retired and the whole conversation about work seems to miss us entirely.

We need to find work that resonates with us. This is why career counseling and taking stock of your gifts is so important. This is why we don’t want our retired brothers and sisters to wither and fade away. God made us to do good work and he’ll help us find it.

Notice that the work God gave the man in today’s passage didn’t include an employment contract and a paycheck. The work God gives you may not be the work that pays your bills and it may not be your day job. That’s okay!

Where has God given you work that resonates?

If you have work that resonates with you …

  • Celebrate God’s good gift of work
  • Ask how you should steward this good work you’ve been given
  • Seek to grow better and better at your work

If you don’t have work that resonates with you …

  • Take time to re-evaluate and consider making changes
  • Look for places where you adjust the work you’re already doing
  • Try things in your free time, looking for something that clicks

May God bless you with meaningful work!
