Your heart and your treasure

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
- Luke 12:34

Your treasure can steer your heart. Put your treasure where you want your heart to be and your heart will follow. This is remarkably good news.

Our hearts tend to be fickle, difficult to understand, and almost impossible to control. Almost impossible. Jesus’ teaching on this point strikes us as shockingly straightforward. If you want your heart to be fully invested in God’s kingdom, you need to pay attention to where your financial resources are going.

What does that look like? Give to the poor. Help a neighbor out. Support a missionary. Share your lawn mower or your leaf blower. Cook a meal for someone in crisis. Donate to the church. Use the judgment and creativity that God’s given you. You can do it!

None of this hinges on how much money you have. If you’re bringing home $1,000 per month or $10,000 per month you still can influence where your heart, your passion, your commitments end up. Jesus cares about your “treasure” because he treasures you and knows the impact that our resources have on our allegiances.

Look at his own example. He gave all that he had to rescue us – his very lifeblood. He poured out all of his resources for the glory of his Father and the redemption of each and every one of us. His treasure and his heart stood in perfect alignment. And we have never been more blessed.

Where would you like your heart to be? How does your investment of your resources align with this desire? What can you change to improve this alignment?
